What is Opticoat 2.0?

A clear resin coating or a one component moisture cure clear coat. It forms a ceramic bond that is extremely strong. It is formally understood as a “Ceramic-Silicon Carbide clear resin coating”.

  • painted surfaces
  • headlights
  • wheels & calipers
  • plastic trim – New Opti Coating is soon to be released. (Dec 2012)
  • bumpers
  • aluminum & chrome surfaces
  • engine compartments
Not recommended for glass surfaces since visual impairment is possible if improperly applied. Opti – Lens based coating will be released very shortly (Dec 2012)

When can you Opticoat?

Best time to apply would be straight from a new car purchase. Since the vehicle is as close to perfect, minimal effort is needed to apply the coating.

Why use Opticoat?

The coating carries many attributes that far outclass normal waxes or sealants:

  • adds clear coat thickness to paint (approximately 2 microns)
  • longevity is reported to be between 3-5 years
  • stays cleans longer and easier against contamination
  • better  UV, scratch, & mar resistance
  • better resistance to chemical etching and oxidation
  • better gloss retention
  • better release properties to dirt and oil
  • will not oxidize, but will bead water and release dirt

How do you apply Opticoat?

1 Polish paint with Optimum Polish II or Optimum Finish to remove any defects.
2 Clean surface with 15% IPA solution to remove all polishing oils, waxes, and silicones.
3 Prime the applicator by making an X pattern across the pad. Only a few drops will be needed for each subsequent panel.
4 Wipe Optimum Opti-Coat 2.0 onto a single panel at a time in a thin layer using two directions, in a circular or front to back direction.
5 Within 5 minutes, inspect the panel with adequate lighting looking for any thick areas that have not flashed away to clear.
6 Use foam applicator or paint safe microfiber to even out any areas where you see streaks. This step is key, as any spots not leveled will have to be polished if allowed to cure. Panels will feel a bit tacky and will be self-leveling during cure time, so avoid any unnecessary touching, wiping, or contact to produce the best results. 
 Repeat steps 1-6 for each panel where application is desired.

Importance of the Curing Process

A few extremely important notes of the curing process:

  • first hour no water or chemicals can touch the surface
  • first 24 hours no chemicals should touch the surface
  • full bonding occurs after 30 days
  • any high spots (basically excess Opticoat spots that look oily) can be easily remedied with a finishing polish

Who created Opticoat?

Dr.Ghodoussi of Optimum Polymer Technologies first created the initial OptiGuard in 2004 for professional applications which went under 4 years of testing. Opticoat 2.0 underwent 3 years of testing for consumers, with a clear difference aimed at having a slower flashing product.

Other Notes

  • does not protect against paint chip, paint protection film is the best solution
  • the coating is layer able, however since the initial application bonds so fast there is no need to layer the product
  • you can top the coating with wax & sealants, however do not expect any difference since the coating resists bonds
  • the coating does won’t wear with basic abrasives or paint removers, it needs to be aggressively mechanically removed
  • not applicable to interior surfaces, Optimum is developing an interior product.
